UAE inaugurates Phase 1 of the Umm Al Quwain water desalination plant to ensure water security.

The UAE is developing three water desalination plants in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Umm Al Quwain, combining 420 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), bringing the country's total water capacity to 1,590 MIGD.

HE Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has originally inaugurated Phase 1 of the $599 million (AED2.2 billion) UAQ desalination plant, which is being built on 250,000 square metres at a cost of about AED2.2 billion to provide world-class quality water using the best standards for the marine environment and water desalination, and it was implemented with high efficiency in delivering an environmental footprint. When fully operational, it will generate 50 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), with a total capacity of 150 MIGD. UAE has made robust contributions in the field of international cooperation by providing water development assistance and sanitation projects to countries in need. It is important to rationalize consumption to ensure sustainable consumption of energy, water, mining, and infrastructure for the happiness and prosperity of society. The plant was built in accordance with the highest international water desalination standards. Electric motors with variable frequency drive technology are installed to reduce energy consumption. The project is planned to be commercially operational in the third quarter of 2022, using reverse osmosis technology.

This desalination plant project in Umm Al Quwain is the country's largest in the north. The project is part of the UAE's efforts to improve water production in order to meet increasing demands. It is one of the most critical projects that will achieve the objectives of the National Water Security Strategy 2036.
