UAE: The new generation Emirates ID to replace residency visa on passports

From April 11, UAE resident visas will be issued through Emirates ID (EID) cards rather than paper stickers in passports, according to a circular released by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security. All relevant residency-related information is contained in the ID.

The cancellation decision also streamlines the process of obtaining and renewing UAE residence for expats by providing a single application that comprises both the issue and renewal of residency as well as the Emirates ID.

The Authority stated that its smart application allows users to obtain an electronic copy of their identity card upon request, stressing that the new generation of the Emirates ID card issued to foreigners residing in the UAE includes all of the details previously mentioned in the residence sticker, enhancing the added value for the ID card's uses in proving the personal identity of individuals through the presence of personal and professional data, the issuing entity and other readable data on the surface of the card and the implicit details enhanced through electronic linking techniques.

The stamps would only be available through the authority's smart application. This will help in the transition from the usage of residence stamps to the use of the Emirates ID.

Although the change will apply to visas issued after April 11, information from older visas will also be available through the citizenship authority’s smart application.

The move is part of a wider UAE government shift to upgrade services and achieve customer happiness.
